Things to Do In Northern Ireland

In Northern Ireland you can move from walled cities to basalt cliffs, quiet loughs and wild headlands in a single loop. One day might have you walking the ramparts in Derry, looking out over the Foyle and the layered history of the city, then crossing into Donegal through border villages like Muff and following the road towards Inishowen. Another might start around Newry and Rostrevor, taking in forest walks and views across Carlingford Lough before you head towards Strangford and the calm tidal waters and ferry crossings of the east coast. Inland, places like Silent Valley and the Mourne foothills give you reservoir walks and broad mountain views without needing full hiking days.

Along the north coast, you can string together harbour towns, castles and big Atlantic views. Routes through Islandmagee, Glenarm and Carnlough bring you up the Antrim coast, while Ballycastle, Rathlin Island and the stretch towards the Giant’s Causeway and Bushmills give you cliffs, sea stacks and long, pounding surf. Farther west, places like Downhill, Magilligan and the edges of Lough Foyle keep the shoreline close, with beaches, dunes and railway lines slipping between headlands. Evenings tend to end in small towns and villages with straightforward pubs and harbour walks, or in Belfast and Derry if you want live music, murals and city energy before dropping back into quieter miles the next morning.
